Safe Re-entry with Thermal Imaging Systems

Thermal Imaging System
Businesses are finding new ways to protect their buildings during and after COVID-19. Asking for a temperature check is one of the most popular options and will likely become a part of our daily routine.

In some cases, a handheld, the non-contact thermometer will work just fine. But they're labor-intensive, and you have to be up close to get a good reading.

Thermal imaging systems are an effective way to screen for high temperatures while maintaining a safe distance.

Thermal imaging systems measure skin surface temperature to determine if a person has a fever. They may also be called temperature screening systems or temperature screening kiosks.

Most of these systems have an infrared camera that can read a person's temperature.

Thermal imaging has been used in hospitals for some time, but during the COVID-19 pandemic, it's gaining popularity in non-medical settings like airports and office buildings.

To help you evaluate whether a temperature screening system is right for you, read the following pros and cons based on FDA guidelines.

Advantages of Thermal Imaging Systems

Overall, thermal imaging systems are a fast and effective non-contact method of temperature screening, the FDA said.

The following are the advantages of using a temperature screening system:

Contactless - Thermal imaging systems actually take "contactless" one step further. Unlike a thermometer, you don't have to be near the person to take his or her temperature.

Quick Response - Thermometer kiosks typically work faster than standard thermometers, so you don't have to worry about it taking too long to enter a building.

Scientifically Accurate - Thermal imaging cameras will give you scientifically accurate temperature readings when used correctly.

Disadvantages of Thermal Imaging Systems

Before purchasing a thermal imaging system, there are some disadvantages you should be aware of:

Limited Indicators - Fever alone does not indicate that a person has COVID-19. Some people with COVID-19 have no symptoms and never develop a fever. Others may have a fever but have an illness other than COVID-19. If the temperature screening system shows a fever, it is best to have a follow-up program to determine the next steps.

Limited Scanning – Thermal imaging systems are most effective when scanning only one person at a time. Although the technology is evolving to include crowd scanning, the FDA recommends using the system for only one person at a time.

Confined Environment - Temperature kiosks are sensitive to their surroundings and will only function properly under the right conditions. Room temperature and lighting can affect the outcome of the results.

How to Use a Thermal Imaging System to Screen Temperatures?

Using a thermal imaging system to screen temperatures is as easy as walking to a designated kiosk or to an infrared camera.

Without touching anything, the system will automatically scan the person's body temperature. If the temperature is acceptable, the screen will turn green or say "pass". If the temperature is unacceptable, the screen will turn red or say "failed".

Most temperature screening kiosks are adjustable, so you can set the temperature to indicate pass or fail.

Thermal imaging systems measure superficial skin temperature, which is usually lower than an oral temperature.

Here Are Some Guidelines to Follow, As Recommended by the FDA:

1. Properly Position the Kiosk – Placing the thermal imaging system in front of glass or mirrors, or against a sunny or brightly lit background can affect the results. Room temperature can also affect the reading. Avoid distracting environments for reliable results.

2. Follow the Manufacturer's Guidelines - Make sure at least one person trained in the system can turn on and monitor the system according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Instruct Employees and Customers – Some systems require people to keep a certain distance from the camera. If the person is wearing a mask, other people may not be able to get a temperature reading. Communicate clear expectations for employees, customers, and tenants who use the system.

4. Make a Plan – If there are signs of a fever, make a plan. You should have another thermometer on hand to confirm the temperature and, if a fever is confirmed, have a proper sanitizing plan in place.
